Jonathan Hemmant

LawBite Customer Comments

From the moment I spoke to Jonathan I knew he was the right guy to help me sort my issues. Jonathan was knowledgeable, responsive and helped me resolve all the issues I had. I would recommend Jonathan for any future employment-related enquiries LB

Experience

Jonathan Hemmant is a senior employment and commercial services lawyer. Qualifying as a solicitor in 2000 he has worked for almost all his career for full service City Firms or niche firms run by lawyers with a Magic Circle/US firm background, acting as the employment department head for two of the firms he has worked for, one of which he helped to establish.

Jonathan advises on a wide range of contentious and non – contentious employment law issues and also carries out commercial work, having particular expertise advising on arrangements for the provision of staff and services that fall outside of the standard employment model.

Throughout his career Jonathan has represented senior employees and self-employed professionals across a wide range of industry sectors, from financial services to IT, routinely advising employees on settlement agreements.

Whilst he has also acted for large household name clients, including the Bank of England, Jonathan particularly enjoys acting for SMEs/owner managed businesses, including start-ups.

In recent years Jonathan has developed particular expertise advising GP practices and private healthcare providers on staffing matters, working with a leading practice in this field.

In his own words...

“I respect entrepreneurs and enjoy forming a close working relationship with them, gaining a real understanding of their various businesses, then having a hand in contributing towards their success. I have first-hand experience of the pressures that those managing SMEs work under, particularly in respect of often emotionally charged staffing issues, and understand the need for precise, timely, cost-effective and above all commercially focused guidance, identifying solutions not just problems.”

Education

  • 1997 – 1998 University of the West of England – Legal Practice Course: Merit.
  • 1996 – 1997 University of Exeter – Post Graduate Diploma in Law: Merit.
  • 1991 – 1994 University of Bristol BSc (Joint Hons) Politics & Sociology 2:1.

Achievements

Advising and assisting on the migration of key staff and their clients from a failing law firm by which I was employed to a company of which I became a director, successfully limiting significant employment-related liabilities. If this had not been achieved the new business owners risked bankruptcy and all those employed by them (including myself) would have lost their jobs.

Working as a consultant for a small niche law firm over a number of years contributing as a “valued team member” towards it becoming an award-winning practice and being rated by the Chambers legal directory as a leading practice in its field.

Other Interests

Competitive Badminton, hiking, transcontinental driving to Poland (with dog) to visit the in-laws and working as a taxi service for my teenage daughter. Cooking food I like to eat.
